Dustin L. Spinhirne


Dustin has over 15 years of experience in the tech industry and specializes in designing, deploying, and managing large-scale cloud environments. His technical experience includes a strong background in IP network architectures, virtualization technologies, Linux systems, programming, and operations tools and methodologies. In addition to his hands-on technical abilities, he also has extensive experience in building and leading technical teams and has been involved, on multiple occasions, with transitioning small startup operations into world-class organizations. Dustin’s current focus at VMware is helping enterprises transition, from both a technical and organizational perspective, to the software defined data center.

Solutions Architect Principal, Network & Security Business Unit (08/2012 - present)

As the Solutions Architect Principal I am responsible for assisting our enterprise and service provider customers in their transition to a software defined data center. In addition to providing technical guidance to customers I am also responsible for general business development, developing new service offerings, leading technical seminars, and managing critical account escalations.


Systems Engineer / Solutions Architect (02/2011-08/2012)

As an original member of the sales organization I was responsible for both pre-sales activities as well as post-sales design and deployment. As Nicira matured from a small startup company into a larger organization my focus shifted to helping enterprise and service providers transition their operations, from both a technical and organizational perspective, to support software defined networking and open cloud architectures. As part of this process I was responsible for designing production scale implementations, coordinating upgrades and migrations, and handling critical escalations.

General Datatech

Engineering Practice Lead: (8/2009-2/2011)

As the original route/switch practice lead for GDT I was responsible for leading both pre-sales and post-sales activities for enterprise and service provider accounts. During my time with GDT I helped to on-board several new employees and provided organizational guidance to my team during the key transitional period from a small-scale VAR (value added reseller) to one of the largest VARs in the nation.


Senior Network Architect: (9/2000-8/2009)

As one of the original employees of Rackspace I was a key part of their transition from a small-scale startup to a leader in the hosting provider industry. During my tenure I not only helped to grow the engineering group from our original two-member team to over 100 employees worldwide, but also lead many of the efforts to improve operations as a whole and to build the Rackspace brand reputation of uptime and reliability.

Sample Technical Projects


OpenStack Design/Deploy: Designed and implemented OpenStack based cloud utilizing VMware NSX as the network virtualization solution. Have completed solutions for multiple enterprise and service provider organizations including one of the largest ISPs in the world and several major cloud hosting providers.

Cloud Automation and Development: Developed a continuous integration cloud solution utilizing the Openstack code base on github. Solution involved writing custom build scripts for Jenkins, custom deployment and upgrade scripts using bash/python, and made use of Ansible for deployment automation.

Network Design

Network Architecture Redesign: A major project that I lead was to rebuild the entire core network infrastructure for a large financial institution. The new architecture was required due to rapid expansion of the business and the need for them to quickly add new infrastructure with minimal disruption. A major requirement, which was met, was to shift to the new architecture with no downtime.

Rackspace Cloud Network Services: Lead the effor in the design, development, testing, and implementation of all internal networks used to support the Rackspace Cloud initiative.

Rackspace Core Network Design: Series of ongoing projects to scale the Rackspace network to meet ever increasing demands. Projects involved planning/testing/implementation of multi-vendor networking gear and advanced routing/switching design (eg. BGP/OSPF, MPLS, L2 switching).

Globally redundant DNS: Provided a solution for global load balancing of Rackspace’s authoritative DNS servers. Solution involved the use of OSPF and BGP anycasting in order to provide both traffic balancing and redundant failover capabilities.

Software Development

In general I use my development skills in order to avoid performing manual, low-value, repetative tasks. Thus, the majority of my projects involve automation of my daily responsibilties in some form or fashion. While I don’t consider code development my primary focus I have authored multiple enterprise-grade systems over the years (including IPAM and TACACS auth systems) which have been in service for more than a decade.
