Dustin L. Spinhirne
Dustin has 20 years of industry experience and specializes in designing, deploying, and managing large-scale data center networks and public/private cloud environments. His technical experience includes a strong background in IP network architectures, virtualization technologies, systems administration, programming, and operations. In addition to his hands-on technical abilities, he also has an extensive background in building and leading technical teams and has been involved early on with multiple startups. Dustin’s current focus is business development and helping enterprises transition their operations to VMware Cloud.
Product Solutions Architect, VMware Cloud Product Management (02/2020 - present)
The PSA role is designed to act in both a field-facing and internal-facing capacity and serves as a hybrid solutions architect / product manager for the VMC business unit. As a field-facing resource, the PSA acts as a representative of the the product management team by delivering roadmap sessions, providing architectural guidance for large-scale deployments, and by serving as an internal advocate for the customer. As an internal-facing resource, the PSA drives product roadmap by bridging the gap between customers and VMware PM/engineering teams, and by using the lessons learned from the field to help deliver product features which provide the most impact to customers.
As the first member of the team, I am responsible for establishing the operations model for the PSA function as well as for building out the remainder of the group.
Lead Solutions Architect, VMware Cloud (04/2018 - 02/2020
As the Lead Solutions Architect, I acted in both a technical capacity supporting advanced customer deployments of VMware Cloud services, and a leadership capacity providing direction to the global team of solutions architects. One of the primary responsibilities of this role was to assist in building out the Customer Success team in such a way as to take our operations from start-up mode, to full-scale production mode.
Solutions Architect Principal, VMware Cloud (06/2017 - 04/2018
As a founding member of the VMware Cloud Customer Success team, I was responsible for not only building out the initial team of solutions architects, but providing technical and architectural support for early-adopters of VMware Cloud services. The primary focus of this team was to enable customer adoption of VMware Cloud on AWS and various associated VMware Cloud services.
Solutions Architect Principal, Network & Security Business Unit (08/2012 - 06/2017
As the Solutions Architect Principal, I was responsible for assisting our enterprise and service provider customers in their transition to a software defined data center. In addition to providing technical guidance to customers I was also responsible for general business development, developing new service offerings, leading technical seminars, and assisting with critical account escalations.
Senior Solutions Architect (08/2011-08/2012
As our customers moved into production I shifted roles to become the first solutions architect within Nicira. As part of this transition my focus shifted to post sales activities where my primary responsibilities were designing production scale implementations, coordinating upgrades and migrations, and handling critical escalations. As the initial solutions architect I had the additional responsibility of building out the remainder of the team.
In August 2012 Nicira was acquired by VMware.
Systems Engineer (02/2011-08/2011
As an original member of the sales organization I was responsible for on-boarding our initial customers, coordinating training activities with them, facilitating pre-production testing, and working with product management to further enhance our product. As an additional responsibility I was tasked with building out the initial team of Systems Engineers.
Engineering Practice Lead: (8/2009-2/2011
As the original route/switch practice lead for GDT I was responsible for leading both pre-sales and post-sales activities for enterprise and service provider accounts. During my time with GDT I helped to on-board several new employees and provided organizational guidance to my team during the key transitional period from a small-scale VAR (value added reseller) to one of the larger VARs in the nation.
Senior Network Architect: (9/2000-8/2009
As one of the original employees of Rackspace I was a key part of their transition from a small-scale startup to a leader in the hosting provider industry. During my tenure I not only helped to grow the network engineering group from our original two-member team to over 100 employees worldwide, but also lead many of the efforts to improve operations as a whole and to build the Rackspace brand reputation of uptime and reliability.

Cloud Automation and Development
Developed a continuous integration cloud solution utilizing the Openstack code base on github. Solution involved writing custom build scripts for Jenkins, custom deployment and upgrade scripts using bash/python, and made use of Ansible for deployment automation.
Designed and implemented OpenStack based cloud utilizing Nicira NVP as the network virtualization solution. I completed solutions for multiple enterprise and service provider organizations including one of the largest ISPs in the world and several major cloud hosting providers.
Network Architecture Redesign
A major project that I lead was to rebuild the entire core network infrastructure for a large financial institution. The new architecture was required due to rapid expansion of the business and the need for them to quickly add new infrastructure with minimal disruption. A major requirement was to shift to the new architecture with no downtime.
Rackspace Cloud Network Services
Lead the effort in the design, development, testing, and implementation of all internal networks used to support the Rackspace Cloud initiative.
Rackspace Core Network Design
Series of ongoing projects to scale the Rackspace network to meet ever increasing demands. Projects involved planning/testing/implementation of multi-vendor networking gear and advanced routing/switching design (eg. BGP/OSPF, MPLS, L2 switching).
Globally redundant DNS
Provided a solution for global load balancing of Rackspace’s authoritative DNS servers. Solution involved the use of OSPF and BGP anycasting in order to provide both traffic balancing and redundant failover capabilities.
TACACS+ AAA System
Due to specific needs of our organization and lack of commercial products which met these needs, I designed and coded a custom solution which provided a web based UI on top of a series of custom tacacs+ daemons.
